Topic 7: Dyadic Relationship, Followership and Delegation

This week, I have learned about Dyadic Relationships, Followership and Delegation. As usual, the Dr will ask first if the students have any questions about the assignments given. I have taken this opportunity to ask if this week is week 9 because assignment 1 must make a reflection starting from week 9 until week 14. The Dr has answered my questions well and I have obtained the necessary information. In addition, Dr also gave information about learning in week 11 there will be a speech titled Youth and Success: Young CEO Learn From. The program will take place on Friday 22 December 2023.

At the beginning of learning, the Dr will explain the learning outcome after finishing learning about this topic. Among the learning outcomes that will be obtained are 4 stages of development / dyadic approach, vertical linkage model relationship, team building view / dyadic approach, systems and networks view / dyadic approach, LMX Life Cycle model, Cycle leading to Pygmalion effect, 3 Follower influencing characteristics and 5 things a leader should delegate.

A quote shared by Dr that caught my attention because it is very useful if I become a leader. I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion by Alexander the Great. A group will be feared if it has a brave leader. However, leaders and followers have their respective roles in complementing each other. The key is to have a good relationship between the learner and the follower. Among the importance of having a good relationship between leader and follower is to ensure that the organization’s goals are achieved and able to face common challenges.

Dyadic means the relationship between a leader and each follower in a work unit. There are 4 stages of development for Dyadic approach which is Vertical-Dyad Linkage Theory, Leader-member Exchange (LMX). Team Building and Systems and Networks.

Vertical Dyad Linkage (VDL) theory is for understanding how leaders create in-group and out-groups. In-group means those subordinates with strong social ties to their leader in a people-oriented style while out-group means those subordinates with little or no social ties to their leader, strictly task-oriented relationship. For example, in-group, come early meeting and respect time. For example, out-group, come late to the office and don’t care about anything else at work.

Next, I have learned about Dyadic Theory Team Building. Team building programs can reduce stress and strengthen the relationship between leaders and followers in the office. This can also reduce out-group workers. Then, the LMX Life Cycle model has 3 stages. Stage 1 is Leader and follower conduct themselves as the strangers. For this stage, we are testing acceptable behaviour and negotiating the relationships. Stage 2 is leader and follower become acquainted. For this stage, mutual trust, loyalty and respect has been developed. Stage 3 is roles reach maturity. For this last stage, we can increase the mutual commitment to the organization.

Followers also have several types such as alienated followers, passive followers, conformist followers, pragmatic followers and effective followers. The good one is the effective followers. Effective followers can be described as courageous, responsible, and proactive.

Finally, I learned about delegation which means the process of assigning to a subordinate the responsibility and authority for accomplishing objectives. Things that can be delegated are paperwork, routine tasks, technical matters, tasks with developmental potential and solving employees’ problems.

After end of the learning delivered by Dr, the presentation activity continued by group 5 entitled the leader-follower relationship. This group consists of 5 members namely Zul, Umairah, Nurfarahin, Hazlynda and Siti Norzana. Sad news that Siti Norzana could not be with us today because her mother passed away. Overall, the presentation was very interesting but there were a few technical matters in terms of video sound. How ever, this group has done very well. This group also provides a quizizz activity and I got 13th place even though it was only one of the questions wrong. I must compete again with my classmates if there are activities like this in the future. I will make sure that I will answer quickly and correctly to win this activity.

Overall, today’s topic is very useful and very helpful for me to become a leader in the future. I will use all the theory that has been taught today.
